Everything You Need to Know About Potholes Repair
A pothole is a hole in a site, sidewalk, or parking lot caused by the disintegration of the coated substrate from the surface. They are commonly found on poorly maintained tracks or parking lots. The word comes from the hens which tended to settle in the holes in the paths before the industrial sites were paved. In this article, we will talk about potholes, prevention, and, potholes repair.
How do potholes form?
Water and its variations in shape are the main cause of potholes. The cycle begins with cracks in the track. These cracks arise from the natural deterioration over time of the bitumen, or because of a badly made break of the asphalt, an intensive passage, and movements of the sub-layer of the track which have repercussions on the surface, or various impacts on the track.
Water rushes through these cracks, quickly or slowly. This water freezes and thus takes up more volume, exerting pressure on the surface. When there is a thaw, the water retracts and leaves a cavity which weakens the pavement. Passing over this weakened surface ends up creating a hole.
How do prevent potholes?
Potholes are more likely to be found in cold regions and on poorly maintained pavements and tracks. The best way to prevent potholes is to fill the cracks in the tracks as soon as they appear, with an asphalt seal, cold or hot.
An unrepaired pothole is bound to get bigger. It is also preferable to prevent large holes to repair small holes as soon as they form.
What damage is caused?
On vehicles, the most common damage is to the tires which can puncture, and to the wheels themselves which can become deformed. There are also risks for the steering parts, the suspensions, the exhaust, or even the chassis if the impact is violent.
There is also a risk for pedestrians to trip or fall because of the holes and it is even more important to repair potholes on the alleys and sidewalks for which one is responsible, the incidents being able to lead to questioning of this responsibility.
Potholes Repair: How do you fix potholes?
The 2 methods to simplify are on the one hand hot asphalt and on the other hand cold asphalt. It can also sometimes be repaired with concrete. Hot pothole repairs generally concern surfaces larger than a simple pothole, they are more expensive, and more complicated to implement but more durable and leave a more even-looking pavement. Repairing simple hot holes does not have much interest, as much to make larger surfaces, taking into account the inconvenience and the implementation which often requires a truck, several workers, and a closing of the lane.
What are the advantages of cold asphalt?
- The price: the cold asphalt is less expensive because the installation is easier, and one is satisfied to fill the holes on a limited surface. This avoids redoing an entire area. Even with a more limited lifespan and even if the holes have to be redone after a few years, the price advantage remains.
- Very limited disturbance: the repair is carried out in a few minutes and the track is immediately put back into service, there is no drying time. The discomfort is minimal, unlike the hot mix.
- It can be used in any season: the cold mixes used by Pavement Services can be applied down to a temperature of -20 °, so it can be done in winter, which is not the case for ‘hot-coated.
- Good durability: Pavement services use quality cold asphalt that has an expected life of 5 years for a busy site, more for a driveway or sidewalk. Economically, compared to the hot mix which lasts 10 years, this is valid because less than 2 times cheaper.
Can we fill it in with concrete?
Yes, it is possible, by reinforcing the concrete. This is done when certain points are subjected to the weight of the truck maneuvering in shear. The problem with concrete is that it is stronger than asphalt, and where the concrete meets the asphalt, you will have holes that will form. Concrete also has the same disadvantage as hot mixes installation and drying times. It is in fact to be avoided as much as possible but not completely excluded.
Are you in a hurry?
When sealing cracks and filling potholes, it is important to cut off the problem of buds. If the paved area is in fairly poor condition, it is no longer possible to repair it and it is recommended that you remove and replace everything.
